ABOUT SONIA

As the newly appointed Common Councilmember for Albany’s First Ward, Sonia Frederick is continuing the strong legacies of her predecessors, Dorcey Applyrs and Dominick Calsolaro. As First Ward’s representative, she is determined to care for her neighbors by representing what they stand for and making sure the City of Albany meets her community’s needs.

Growing up in a single-parent Section 8 household in the Finger Lakes Region, Sonia experienced first-hand how important a strong, unified community is to the well-being and development of its families and businesses. This experience shaped who she is today and is why she has become such an active member of the Democratic Committee in the First Ward.

Sonia is a proud, first-time homeowner of a fixer-upper on Sparkill Avenue with her long-term partner, Antonio, and their dog, Oliver. As a homeowner, Sonia has created strong ties with her neighbors and works towards making her neighborhood feel welcoming to all.

Before purchasing her home, Sonia lived in the Pine Hills Neighborhood while she attended the University at Albany. Upon graduating with honors and earning a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Business Administration, Sonia began her career in state and local government consulting at KPMG, LLP, in 2017. Alongside her day-to-day duties, she is active in her company’s Hispanic and Latino network, Woman’s network, and various community initiatives within the City, including events with Equinox and Junior Achievement.

Outside of work, Sonia devotes her free time as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with Delmar-Bethlehem’s volunteer squad. In this role, she provides urgent medical care to those in need and has become educated in the role public health initiatives have in maintaining a healthy community.

Being newly appointed as Albany’s First Ward Common Council member and the second Latinx to serve on the Council, Sonia Frederick understands how fortunate she is to have this opportunity. She is determined to earn the support of her neighbors and community and show that she deserves to continue to represent the Ward that she loves.
